Howl's Moving Castle

Howl's Moving Castle is a fantasy novel by British author Diana Wynne Jones, first published in 1986 by Greenwillow Books of New York. It was a runner-up for the annual Boston Globe–Horn Book Award and it won the Phoenix Award twenty years later, recognizing its rise from relative obscurity. In 2004 it was adapted as ananimated film of the same name, which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

Howl's Moving Castle is the first novel in the series of books called the Howl Series. This series also includesCastle in the Air, published in 1990, and House of Many Ways, published in 2008. WorldCat reports that Howl's Moving Castle is the author's work most widely held in participating libraries, followed by its first sequel Castle in the Air.

For the idea Jones "very much" thanked "a boy in a school I was visiting", whose name she had noted but lost and forgotten. He had "asked me to write a book titled The Moving Castle."

Spirited Away

Spirited Away (Japanese: 千と千尋の神隠し Hepburn: Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi^?, "Sen and Chihiro's Spiriting Away") is a 2001 Japanese animated fantasy film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki and produced by Studio Ghibli.^[5] The film stars Rumi Hiiragi, Miyu Irino, Mari Natsuki, Takeshi Naito, Yasuko Sawaguchi, Tsunehiko Kamijō, Takehiko Ono and Bunta Sugawara, and tells the story of Chihiro Ogino (Hiiragi), a sullen ten-year-old girl who, while moving to a new neighborhood, enters the spirit world. After her parents are transformed into pigs by the witch Yubaba (Natsuki), Chihiro takes a job working in Yubaba's bathhouse to find a way to free herself and her parents and return to the human world.

Miyazaki wrote the script after he decided the film would be based on his friend, associate producer Seiji Okuda's ten-year-old daughter, who came to visit his house each summer.^[6] At the time, Miyazaki was developing two personal projects, but they were rejected. With a budget of US$19 million, production of Spirited Away began in 2000. During production, Miyazaki realized the film would be over three hours long and decided to cut out several parts of the story. Pixar director John Lasseter, a fan of Miyazaki, was approached by Walt Disney Pictures to supervise an English-language translation for the film's North American release. Lasseter hired Kirk Wise as director and Donald W. Ernst as producer of the adaptation. Screenwriters Cindy Davis Hewitt and Donald H. Hewitt wrote the English-language dialogue, which they wrote to match the characters' original Japanese-language lip movements.^[7]

The film was released on 20 July 2001, and became the most successful film in Japanese history, grossing about $289 million worldwide and receiving widespread critical acclaim. The film overtook Titanic (at the time the top grossing film worldwide) in the Japanese box office to become the highest-grossing film in Japanese historywith a ¥30.4 billion total. Spirited Away frequently ranks among the greatest animated films.^[8][9][10] It won theAcademy Award for Best Animated Feature at the 75th Academy Awards, the Golden Bear at the 2002 Berlin International Film Festival (tied with Bloody Sunday) and is among the top ten in the BFI list of the 50 films you should see by the age of 14.

My Neighbor Totoro

My Neighbor Totoro (Japanese: となりのトトロ Hepburn: Tonari no Totoro^?) is a 1988 Japanese animatedfantasy film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki and produced by Studio Ghibli. The film – which stars the voice actors Noriko Hidaka, Chika Sakamoto, and Hitoshi Takagi – tells the story of the two young daughters (Satsuki and Mei) of a professor and their interactions with friendly wood spirits in postwar rural Japan. The film won the Animage Anime Grand Prix prize and the Mainichi Film Award and Kinema Junpo Award for Best Film in 1988. It also received the Special Award at the Blue Ribbon Awards in the same year.

The film was released on VHS and laserdisc in the United States by Tokuma Japan Communications' US subsidiary in 1993 under the title My Friend Totoro. In 1988, Streamline Pictures produced an exclusive dub for use on transpacific flights by Japan Airlines. Troma Films, under their 50th St. Films banner, distributed the dub of the film co-produced by Jerry Beck. It was released on VHS and DVD by Fox Video. Troma's and Fox's rights to this version expired in 2004. The film was re-released by Walt Disney Pictures on March 7, 2006 and byMadman on March 15, 2006. It features a new dub cast. This DVD release is the first version of the film in the United States to include both Japanese and English language tracks, as Fox did not have the rights to the Japanese audio track for their version.

The movie and its titular character, Totoro, have become cultural icons. My Neighbor Totoro ranked #41 inEmpire magazine's "The 100 Best Films Of World Cinema" in 2010. A list of the greatest animated films compiled by Terry Gilliam in Time Out ranked the film number 1. A similar list compiled by the editors of Time Out ranked the film number 3.The character made multiple cameo appearances in a number of Studio Ghibli films and video games and is recognized as one of the most popular characters in Japanese animation. Totoro was ranked 24th on IGN's top 25 anime characters.

Ghibli Museum, Mitaka

Mitaka Forest Ghibli Museum) is amuseum showcasing the work of the Japanese animation studio Studio Ghibli. It is located in Inokashira Park inMitaka, a western city of Tokyo, Japan. The museum combines features of a children's museum, technology museum, and a fine arts museum, and is dedicated to the art and technique of animation. Some features include a replica of the Catbus from My Neighbor Totoro (1988), a café, bookstore, rooftop garden, and a theater for exclusive short films by Studio Ghibli.

The Museum is closed every Tuesday, except on these Tuesdays: 
　2016: January 5, May 3, August 2, 16
　2017: January 3, March 21
Tickets for October 1 and 2, 2016 are only available to residents of Mitaka city and other neighboring cities.

The Museum is also closed at Year-end and for New Year'sHOLIDAYS, and for periodic maintenance:

Entrance to the Ghibli Museum is strictly by advance purchase of a reserved ticket which specifies the appointed date of the reservation.

Once you purchase a reserved tickets, no changes or refunds are allowed.
When you enter the Museum, you will exchange your reserved ticket with a "film" ticket (Only one film ticket per person).

Restrooms

The Museum offers handicapped use facilities in restrooms on all floors (four either-sex facilities inside, and one facility each for males and females outside the Museum building). We also provide stands for changing baby's diapers.

The Saturn Theater

Hearing assistance earphones are available for loan for the hearing impaired. As of now, only japanese is available.

For visitors using wheelchairs

All facilities in the three-story museum building excluding the roof garden are accessible by wheelchair. Wheelchairs are available for loan at the Museum. There is no elevator or other way to ascend from the second floor to the roof garden, except by the stairs.

For visitors who do not feel well

There are spaces available where you can rest.
Please ask our museum staff for details.

*Photography and video recording are not allowed inside the Museum.
-The Ghibli Museum is a portal to a storybook world. As the main character in a story, we ask that you experience the Museum space with your own eyes and senses, instead of through a camera's viewfinder. We ask that you make what you experienced in the Museum the special memory that you take home with you.

*Admission into the Saturn Theater will be limited to one screening per person.

*Smoking is strictly prohibited on the premises of the Museum.

*Please turn off all mobile phones. You are also asked not to use mobile phones outside the Museum building where they may disturb others.

*Those who are sensitive to light should be aware that in the Permanent Exhibition Room, there is an exhibit that flashes bright bursts of stroboscopic light.

*The garden roof may be closed in case of inclement weather.

*The Cat Bus is for elementary school children and under only.

*Eating and drinking are prohibited inside the Museum. Anyone who has brought food or beverages to the Museum must eat or drink on the Cafe's outside deck only (The deck area may be closed in case of inclement weather) and take with them any litter he/she has created.

*Please leave baby carriages at the designated storage area. Coin lockers are available for small bags and parcels. For large luggage, please contact our Museum staff for assistance.

*It is prohibited to enter the Museum with dangerous objects.

*Pets (except seeing-eye or guide dogs) are not allowed in the Museum.

*Any activities which may interfere with the operation of the Museum, either inside the Museum or in the facilities related to the Museum, are strictly prohibited.

*The Museum reserves the right to refuse admission to anyone who might interfere with other visitors or cause trouble to others in the Museum.

*No re-entry to the Museum is allowed.

*The Museum or its related service providers are not responsible for accidents caused by visitors' negligence.
